The Municipality of Karpathos has initiated a formal partnership with Φιλοζωική Δράση Καρπάθου- Animal Welfare Karpathos. The accredited non -for -profit organization’s main mission is to improve the quality of life of the animals that live on our island.
The organization already has the respect of international organizations, such as the Jane Goodall Institute, and Dr. Jane Goodall (PhD, DBE, UN Messenger of Peace), with whom Dr. Anna Katogiritis has been collaborating since 2014. The organization consists of experienced volunteers who have been helping the stray animals on the island as far back as 1997.
The mayor, Mr. John Nisyrios, met with representatives of Animal Welfare Karpathos, Sophia Hiras and Anna Katogiritis, and discussed the strategy that the city hall can follow in order to help the stray animals of the island.
During the meeting, they also discussed possible spaces that could be utilized by the organization for the spay/neuter campaigns, which will be planned in the next months by the organization. The space, which will be temporarily given to the organization, will follow the government guidelines (GEOTEE), and the city hall will support the initiatives of the volunteers in any way possible.
In addition to the above, discussions were made for the future shelter and possible locations are currently being examined for the creation of a state -of -the -art shelter.
The mayor would like to take this opportunity to thank and congratulate all the volunteers who have been helping our four-legged friends.
It is our hope that all of us together can help in improving the welfare of the animals on the island and reducing the number of strays that are in the streets. We aspire to make Karpathos island a model of animal welfare, something which will also have a positive impact on promoting our island as a noteworthy destination for tourists.

Ο Δήμος Καρπάθου ξεκινά επίσημη συνεργασία με την Φιλοζωική Δράση Καρπάθου - Animal Welfare Karpathos. Η εγκεκριμένη μη κερδοσκοπική εταιρεία έχει ως άμεσο στόχο την βελτίωση της ποιότητας ζωής των ζώων στο νησί μας.
Η οργάνωση έχει ήδη τον σεβασμό διεθνών οργανισμών όπως του Ινστιτούτου Jane Goodall, καθώς και της ίδιας της πρεσβειρας του Ο.Η.Ε. Δρος Τζέιν Γκούντολ με την οποία η συμπατριώτισσα μας κτηνίατρος Αννα Κατωγυρίτη συνεργάζεται στενά από το 2014. Η οργάνωση στελεχώνεται από έμπειρους εθελοντές που από το 1997 βοηθούν έμπρακτα τα αδέσποτα στο νησί.
Ο Δήμαρχος, Γιάννης Νισύριος, δέχτηκε πρόσφατα στο γραφείο του τις εκπροσώπους της Φιλοζωικής Δράσης Καρπάθου, Άννα Κατωγυρίτη και Σοφία Χήρας, και συζήτησαν τη στρατηγική πάνω στην οποία μπορεί να κινηθεί ο Δήμος για να βοηθήσει τα αδέσποτα του νησιού. Κατά την συνάντηση εξετάστηκαν πιθανές αίθουσες που θα μπορούσαν να παραχωρηθούν στην οργάνωση ώστε να πραγματοποιηθούν δωρεάν στειρώσεις για τα αδέσποτα. Ο χώρος που θα παραχωρηθεί πληροί τις προδιαγραφές του ΓΕΩΤ.Ε.Ε. και ο Δήμος θα στηρίξει την προσπάθεια των εθελοντών με οποιονδήποτε τρόπο μπορεί. Επιπλέον, εξετάζονται χώροι για τη δημιουργία κυνοκομείου, το οποίο ελπίζουμε να αποτελέσει πρότυπο.
Με την ευκαιρία ο Δήμαρχος συγχαίρει όλους τους εθελοντές στο νησί που βοηθούν έμπρακτα τους τετράποδους φίλους μας. Ελπίζουμε όλοι μαζί να μπορέσουμε να συνδράμουμε ουσιαστικά στην καλυτέρευση της ζωής τους και στην μείωση του αριθμού των αδέσποτων. Φιλοδοξούμε να καταστήσουμε την Κάρπαθο πρότυπο φιλοζωικής συνείδησης και φροντίδας, κάτι που θα έχει θετικό αντίκτυπο στην τουριστική προβολή του νησιού.
